Need to fly last minute during coronavirus outbreak? Southwest capping fares this week
Anyone who has tried to book a last-minute airline
ticket on Southwest Airlines or any major carrier knows prices are
usually prohibitive.
It's not unusual to see coast-to-coast prices on Southwest in the $351 to $601 range — each way.

The high
prices, normally reserved for business travelers on expense accounts,
have become a problem for travelers scrambling to get home or tend to
family members as the coronavirus crisis escalates and there is talk of potential domestic travel restrictions.
In
response, Southwest said on Monday that it is capping last-minute fares
at $199 one way for tickets purchased this week. American, United and
Delta last week instituted fare caps for travelers rushing to get back to the United States ahead of Europe travel restrictions and a spike in cases abroad.

On
many routes, the last-minute prices are even lower since a precipitous
drop in travel demand has airlines slashing fares across the board.
Need to fly between Washington Dulles and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Tuesday? One-way fares, which are subject to change, start at $109 on Southwest's website today.
Seattle to Los Angeles flights start at $105 for Tuesday or Wednesday travel.
